Creative Together

Artworks Creative Communities was awarded £250,000 through the Big Lottery’s Family Learning Grant programme. This money will be used to work with families from Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Leeds to explore how different creative activities can help families to enjoy learning together and learning about each other.

The project will work with families from a range of backgrounds including Black and Minority Ethnic groups, families in which the parent / carer or child has a disability and families where the child is excluded (or at risk of exclusion) from school. This is an exciting new project for Artworks, as our Youth Arts projects have traditionally focused on how creativity can impact on the lives of young people in settings such as schools, Pupil Referral Units and Youth Centres. Creative Together gives us the opportunity to explore how we can use the arts to help parents and carers to enjoy learning and gain more understanding about their role in their child’s future.

Many of the adults with whom we are working have had negative experiences of traditional educational environments and lack confidence in their ability to help their child. This programme hopes to encourage adults to access further learning allowing them to understand and work towards fulfilling their own potential.

There has been a massive level of interest from different organisations including children’s centres, schools, libraries and community centres, which has resulted in projects using artforms as diverse as lantern making, storytelling, interior design, writing and illustrating books, and junk sculpture.

This long-term project allows us to employ an external evaluator to measure its impact, with the findings being disseminated at the end of the 4 year programme.
